How to Ensure Safe Web Hosting

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

In 2007 StopBadWare, a junction effort through Google, Harvard Law School’s Berkman Center for Internet Security and Oxford University’s Internet Institute, identified more than 90,000 websites that assayed to install malicious software program on visitors computers by Internet browser security holes or programming tricks.

What was troubling is that the report viewed that about 90 percent of the websites flagged as serving “badware” seemed to be otherwise lawful websites that had been hijacked by criminals.

Fundamentally cyber criminals had chopped into badly secured websites, tainting files that then began maliciously attacking site visitors and further diffusing the computer virus.

The answer…? Google immediately red-flagged every infected website with a big, bold cautionary page.

Evidently this is NOT the rather 1st belief you need to deliver visitors to your site and could have more easy been avoided had the web host accepted good protection measures.

When selecting a website you had better call for yourself, does your web host have fine security practices?

A good web hosting company will:
Make sure the latest patches and upgrades are used to their software
NEVER operate outdated web software
Monitor for security loopholes on a regular wheel
Run firewall program (a technology that blocks unauthorized incoming connections).
Unluckily, the web host manufacture is in its babyhood and is presently unregulated, meaning there is no guaranteed your web host firm is performing the security practices it must be.

On the other hand ensuring a safe web isn’t only the web hosting company’s obligation. There are steps that you as the webmaster should act to make sure your website is safe and secure:
Don’t apply weak passwords on any accounts on your hosting website.
Make sure that file privileges are arrange to the adequate level of security.
If your site performs an e-commerce function, you had better ensure you have a valid SSL certificate in place.

Also, do not depend upon your web hosting company to maintenance clean copies of your web pages, check your site regularly and keep a selfsame backup in place. This way, upon noticing something funny you can substitute your contaminated all site easily and directly.

Lastly, carefully that any script you upload to your website isn’t malicious and be wary of allowing inexperienced amateurs to design your site.

One final tip: If there is ANY news, or comment from other users that your hosting service does not maintain a secure platform, then pack up shop and find some other. In the long term, you’ll be thankful you did.

Start A New Blog With Inexpensive Web Hosting

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

When you are looking to start a blog, you want to make sure you do it right.  Or else you will have to backtrack when you get up and running and lose traction.  What I mean is that you can start a free blog on Blogger or Wordpress and have it get tons of subscribers and visitors and then you want to make it look more professional and decide to get your own domain and then you have to get webhosting.  This is where you can lose a lot of momentum and it can be hard to get it back.

What I would recommend is that you sign up for a discount web hosting company.  You can get hosting for under 5 bucks a month.  This will not break the bank.  You can get a reliable web host that will provide you all the features you need and you will look like a professional.

You don’t have to go looking for the cheapest web hosting deal you can find.  The saying holds true that you get what you pay for.  A free webhost will have tons of ads on your site which will really distract your visitors from what you are trying to say.  This will only make you look cheap.

You can find inexpensive web hosting and still get reliability from companies like Hostgator and InMotion Hosting.  They have plans as low as $3 a month.  And then include all the popular features that make starting and running a blog easy as pie.  You enter in the name of the blog and your email address, click a few buttons and voila, you have a new blog. You then need to pick out a cool theme and start blogging.  You can do all this in less than 20 minutes.

Make sure any company you go with has 24/7 tech support. You will find this with the bigger and more reliable web hosting companies. You can rest easy knowing that if anything ever does happen, you will get help when you need it most.  Now go out there and start a new blog.
