Get Your Webhosting Right From Day One

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

If you are serious about doing internet business, choosing your web host could be one of the most critical decision that you have to make.

You need to make sure your webhost:

1. Is up to date. There are a lot of software upgrades in the hosting world and you don’t want to get stuck with an old version of anything.

2. Have well structured redundancy so your server downtime is minimised.

3. Use standard settings and standard softwares. You are guaranteed to spend huge amount of time going through the help files or emailing support if your webhost does not follow the mainstream settings and configurations.

4. It should allow unlimited domain to be hosted under one account. Please do not consider any cheap plans that omit this feature as you will very quickly rack up an insane number of domains in a very short time once you get dip your toe into the internet marketing pool. I know I did.

The trick in choosing is to ignore all the trivial features and focus just on these 4 factors when choosing a webserver. Honestly, those $1 free trial or first 30 days free are just gimmicks. All these pale in insignificance compared to the amount of time and effort that you are going to put working with the web host over the years - and you better make sure your choice is solid.

Do not be sidetracked by the marketing gimmicks. You can theorectically change your webhost any time you like but when you have tens of running, the process is not pretty.

Just make sure you get the above 4 factors solidly taken care of so you can focus your energy and attention on all the other million things that need to be done when running the business online.

I personally have used Hostgator for more than 5 years now and it has served me well. There are other equally good ones out there but I am not in the position to vouch for them as I have not been a long term customer.

However, as long you remember to keep the above priorities in the right order, you should be alright.

Finding a gifted webhost for your internet based business is an crucial piece to the puzzle. These are the people that have control of your server space, web services and file maintenance, so you want to make sure you are protected.

Here are 5 things to look for in a promising host.

1. Consistency There is nothing more important than reliability when it comes to selecting a web hosting company. There are a number of things that can go wrong within an online business and it is assuring to know that your host is there for you. Prior to selecting a company, take the time to look at the percentage of time their servers are working properly. If the servers tend to be down 15% of the time or more, this shaves off valuable time your business is online.

2. Contact info Part of a web hosting company being reliable is also them being available. If your server goes down, you want to know that you can get a hold of the web hosting company as soon as possible. The best way to check on the support personnel is to call them up prior to agreeing to anything to test them out.

3. Domain name With thousands of businesses on the web and millions of web addresses already taken, it can be difficult coming up with an original domain name. However, every shared hosting company should be able to provide you with one for a reasonable price. Check into the support they give you for finding a quality domain name and the prices each hosting company charges for a domain name.

4. CGI access Depending on the type of business you have, you may want to or need to run your own programs. In order to do this, you must have CGI access. Not every webhost offers this, and not every host offers the same capabilities for their CGI access. When researching into a hosting company, check to make sure they offer CGI access that allows you to read, write, and execute on your server.

5. POP account Having a POP3 account is vital for your business because of the protection that it offers. A POP3 account gives you password-protected access to all email delivered to your inbox.

There are several things you want to look into prior to selecting a shared hosting company. The more questions you can come up with to ask the host and the more good old fashioned research you put into your decision, the better off you will be.
